It consists of the three ranges of the Andes, for this
is called “the Andean region”. It includes both the mountains and the valleys
in an area of approximately 305,000 km block the two and extends from the
border with Ecuador to the foothills of the mountain ranges in the plain of the
Atlantic and from west to east outer flank of the Western Cordillera to outer
flank of the Eastern Cordillera.
The Central Cordillera is separated from the
Occidental by a distance of 400m by a geological fault occupied by the Patia
River south and north Cauca River.
The Cordillera Oriental is separated gradually
eastward, creating the largest river basin of Colombia, the Magdalena. This
ridge extends northwest and reaches its highest altitude at 5000 m, forming the
Sierra Nevada del Cocuy before entering Venezuelan territory, where he acquired
the name of Cordillera de Mérida. One arm, called Serrania de Perija, is
evident from this northwards gradually losing altitude and reaches the
Caribbean Sea in Punta Gallinas in the Guajira peninsula, northern Colombia. In
Perijá approaches the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, forming a valley crossed by
the river Cesar.
